how to make nice hot dudes.

My father has been after me to clearly enunciate what exactly hot dudes are. So I told him the next time I made nice, hot dudes, I’d show you how you can make them too.

First assemble this nice cast of characters.

Put a cup of shortening, about a cup and a half of brown sugar, about a half cup of regular sugar and 2 eggs in a mixing bowl.

Pour in a nice amount of vanilla and mix away.

Mother always told me creaming was the most important part of a good cookie so cream away. (See mom, I was listening).

Add 2 cups of flour, 1 tsp of salt and 1 tsp of baking soda.

Now, if you enjoy being particular, feel free to mix those last 3 ingredients in a separate bowl and then dump into your mixer bowl. But don’t worry too much about it.

Chuckle at your lively audience.

You can call them nice hot dudes if you’d like.

Anyways, add about 1 and 1/2 cup of oats, 1 and 1/2 cup of coconut and lots and lots of chocolate chips. These last 3 ingredients are all about what you’re feeling. Feeling coconuty? Add more coconut. Want to pretend these are healthy? Make it two cups of oats. But always add loads of chocolate chips.

And look at that pretty picture.

Get out a spoon and plop these little numbers on a cookie sheet. They don’t need to be perfect. Slide into a 375 degree oven. Cook for approximately 8 minutes and 30 seconds. Possibly a teense bit longer.

You want them to be falling apart. Eat a few hot ones and then as soon as you can get them off the sheet without creating havoc, stick them in the freezer. Ah, so wonderful. Because you didn’t cook the heck out of them originally, they just melt in your mouth after thawing on the counter for a minute or two. So wonderful.

Enjoy!

About A Story of Us

My grandparents 57th wedding anniversary and my first wedding anniversary motivated to journal the adventures life brought our way . I hope to amuse the friends and family I have all over the country and, when I am my grandmothers age, look back at what I have written and chuckle. It's been four years since I began and the snickers I bring myself as I look back propel me to write on. Cheers to the future and happy memories of the past.

I never knew you could fit 18 cookies on a cookie sheet. How clever. That would sure make cookie making faster! BTW, I love dudes. My recipe (got from Julie S.) calls for 1/2 butter and 1/2 oil. I’m sure they end up with the same deliciousness.

I love Dudes, too! It is definitely a family recipe. Did you ever hear the story behind the name “Dudes”? Well, once upon a time, your Gram and Dennis Bowman were a couple. She made this recipe and he liked them. He would say “I want another one of those dudes.” She then re-named her chocolate chip cookie recipe “Dudes”, and the new name has stuck all these years. Isn’t that charming? 🙂
And now you know….The Rest of the Story!

Kelsey! These are making me hungry and I just split Chicken Fried Steak with Phillip 🙂 I am dying to make dudes now. 🙂 Love you and your blog. I was just talking to Jean Jones in the kitchen at camp as we were scooping Chocolate Mousse into cups and she was asking about it. I couldn’t think of the address at the time. Elizabeth Grove is a fan too! Love you!
